At a time when our attention spans seem shorter than ever, photography is the most effective way of communicating information immediately. When you look at the feed on your social media channels, it's the great pictures that pique your interest most.

That's why the Sony World Photography Awards are such an important event. Over 170,000 different pictures have been entered for this year's prize, now whittled down to a shortlist of incredble images. These go from beautiful, abstract shots of modern architecture to a poignant – especially knowing what we now know – photo of protests in Ukraine last year.

Here, we choose our favourites from the competiton, the winners of which will be announced in London on April 23.
